Dana Elaine Owens also known as Queen Latifah is an American rapper singer. in film, music and television Queen Latifah has received 2 Screen Actors Guild Awards (two Image Awards), a Grammy Award as well as six more Grammy nods and has been nominated for her Emmy Award. Queen Latifah grew up in Newark, NJ. Her parents are Rita Owens, Sr. and Lancelot Owens Jr. Latifah's mother and father split when Latifah was ten years old. Latifah was brought up in the Baptist church, and attended Catholic schools within Newark New Jersey. Latifah was her stage name at the time she turned eight. It means very fragile in Arabic. Latifah is who was 5'10" tall power forward for the high school team, was always a tall girl. At her school's game, Latifah performed "Home" from The Wiz. Latifah began to beatbox with the fresh rap ladies. Latifah was a part of in the Flavor Unit in its original form, which consisted of a team of MCs and DJ Mark The 45 King. Mark James aka DJ Mark the 45 King made an audition recording of Queen Latifah's song Princess of the Posse. He sent the recording to Yo! MTV Raps Freddy. The single caught the eye from Tommy Boy Music employee Dante Ross who was signed by Latifah and in 1988 issued her debut track Wrath of My Madness.
